Police set to dig for remains of missing student after serial killer Levi Bellfield ‘confesses’ to her murder

Police are preparing to dig for the remains of missing student who was allegedly killed by serial killer Levi Bellfield.

It is claimed detectives from Scotland Yard interviewed Bellfield, who has been convicted of murdering two women and a schoolgirl, in prison on Tuesday and he confessed to the murder of Elizabeth Chau, who vanished 24 years ago when she was 19.

During the interview it is alleged the former nightclub bouncer, 54, named a location in west London where he claims to have disposed of Ms Chauā€™s body and pointed it out on a map, The Guardian reports.

Officers are now poised to search for Ms Chauā€™s body, Sky News reports.

Ms Chau, a computer studies student at Thames Valley University, went missing from Ealing in west London on April 16 1999.

Bellfield is currently serving two whole-life terms at HM Prison Frankland for the murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler, Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22.

A Met Police spokesperson said: ā€œOn Tuesday 9 May 2023, a 54-year-old male was interviewed under caution. Inquiries continue.

ā€œWe can confirm we remain in contact with Elizabeth Chauā€™s family.

ā€œAt this time we will not be providing an ongoing commentary.

ā€œWe have no comment to make.ā€

Bellfieldā€™s solicitor Theresa Clark has said he wants ā€œto see justiceā€ so Ms Chauā€™s family can have ā€œsome closureā€.

Ms Clark reportedly said: ā€œHe tells me he feels itā€™s important that her family have some closure.

ā€œHe wants to see justice done because they have had to live this for so long and thatā€™s unfair.

ā€œHe gains nothing from it, there is no positive publicity for him.ā€

Bellfield is thought to be the only criminal in UK legal history to be serving two whole-life orders.

He was given a whole life term for murdering Ms McDonnell in 2003, Ms Delagrange and trying to murder Kate Sheedy, 18, in 2004.

He was already serving his sentence when he went on trial for killing schoolgirl Ms Dowler, who was snatched from the street walking home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.

Bellfield was found guilty of abducting and killing the 13-year-old following a trial at the Old Bailey in 2011.
