D’Angel Reflects On 20 Years In Dancehall

The ‘First Lady of Dancehall’ D’Angel is celebrating two decades in the industry.

“My journey in the music for almost two decades has been a journey, yet still I managed to remain consistent with my music and relevant admist the challenges I have to overcome daily. I’m still on the winning side and still creating fresh new music for all age group which I have fun doing,” she told DancehallMag.

Born Michelle Downer, D’Angel—the singjay, model, mother, philanthropist, and entrepreneur—has remained a household name with several tracks such as Stronger, Baby Father (featuring Vybz Kartel), Ramp Ruff and of course her breakout single— Downtown Girl, which she said was originally titled Loving Uptown.

Her latest single is called Time Now released only a week ago. But, she said that some of her older tunes are widely requested.

“The biggest highlight of my career is when I sang Stronger which narrates the story have my life and gave women all across the world strength and even made me that much stronger. So, it’s stronger for me and even after 16 years, that song is timeless and still making an impact,” she added.

“I recently visited Spanish Town High School, and funny enough that’s the song the kids requested so this song is like a No Woman No Cry from the great Bob Marley.”

Transitioning from modeling with Miguel Models in the 1990s, D’Angel revealed that her passion for music has been lifelong, rooted in her family’s musical background.

“My interest in music started from a tender age of 9-years-old. Actually, my dad sings very well so it’s genetic,” she noted.

“The love started developing when I start singing for my family and they gave me the green light and confidence then it moved on to church, community and school. Then, I start entering competitions outside of my community on big stages all over so that in itself prepared me for who I am  now as a bonafied ‘nuh-sugarcoat-water-down-or-dilute’ artist. So, I have been used to the spotlight that’s why I remain the undefeated First Lady Of Dancehall.”

And as for the controversies, critics, and challenges alike, the entertainer said she remains unbothered and victorious.

“I have no regrets with my career choice because it’s my gift and talent from God and I’m a true testimony that no matter what, never give up on your dreams. Keep watering that seed until it blossoms into something magical,” she said.
