Review of ‘My New skin’ Album from GAZ

Review of ‘My New skin’ from GAZ – Two weeks ago GAZ did a thing. He released not only the single, ‘The Afterlife’, but also unveiled a body of work that took the best part of four years to perfect. ‘The Afterlife’ single is a continuum of contemplative musings from GAZ following previously released singles, ‘Lullaby for the world’ and ‘My New skin.’

The album is delightfully packed with emo meets alt vibes, shaken up and stirred with a satisfying shot of rock! (and spice…there’s spice too!) Good luck deciding which is your favourite ‘flavour’ when delving into the album in it’s entirety. Either way, prepare for your thirst to be divinely satiated!

‘My New Skin’  – Song by song

Slow Down – A Haunting and mysterious opening to a mind blowing 360, where the roof is coming down baby! This track serves as a personal red-flag-come-self-check, where GAZ speaks to his innermost about the path of self-destruction he is on. Powerful and gripping!

My New Skin – Another introspective story capturing the powerful journey of transformation and renewal. The song dives deep into the emotional landscape of shedding past burdens and embracing a fresh identity. From the opening notes, there’s a palpable sense of vulnerability. Gaz’s voice carries a weight that reflects the struggles of letting go of non-serving versions of himself. The painful, yet liberating process of moving forward.

Pay to breathe – A melodic message addressing the state we are in, as individuals universally in the sum of it all. Where money is King and we are merely the slaves to a system. Thought provoking real talk!

The Afterlife – A sublime rock ballad packed with emotion with the help of DelMari Shaw and her scintillating vocals. The song – A love pact if you will. Promises of devotion for a love eternal. Perhaps one that bears no hope in this world, but sworn to reunite and transcend beyond death into the next lifetime. I love that!

Dopamine – Being the neurotransmitter that effects our mental health, we find GAZ begging for a boost of the good stuff, reminiscing on happier times when things were more balanced and happy like licking an ice-cream as a little boy. Either that, or it’s a legit drug song! Either way, it’s going to rock you!

She Play Me – A less serious, but undoubtably catchy alt vibe from yesteryear that speaks of a player chick who has him wrapped up in her bs. Definitely relatable to the lads in this day and age of catfish and fake ass h’s right?

Lullaby for the world – The song has a distinct alternative feel that grabs you from the first chords. A bit of Depeche mode, tinged with other 80’s / 90’s Alt-English influences that feel familiar and welcoming if you’re an 80’s kid! The lyrics paint the scene of a dying world, dirty skies, bombs, and chaos! Gaz pleads….’Don’t kill the world for me,’ and that line hits hard. That he would title the song a ‘lullaby,’ was clever. The dictionary meaning: a quiet, gentle song sung to send a child to sleep. Are we ready for eternal slumber?

Heaven – Elevated, easy-listening with an alternative feel. The sound on ‘Heaven’ is infused with a magic trance-like sound that paints an ethereal world into the scene so perfectly when listening. You can’t help but getting lost in the music. Transcendental….

Into the light – Another intense and emotive track with a super tight arrangement that floods you with “the feels.” Haunting background vocals bring the essence of the song to the fore. You cant help but get caught up in the emotional flow of every note, every word. There’s a sense of foreboding about the song, yet, at the same time, hope. It’s the kind of song that will speak without lyrics. If I had to describe ‘Into the light’ in one word, “evocative” would be it. I think I’ve just discovered my favourite on the album!

Time Junkie – An upbeat intro that takes you right back to an atmospheric drift, then back again….and again! Loving the upbeat finale. There’s the perfect blend of synth-pop coming through that adds extra spice to the track, and it’s delicious. The perfect conclusion to an emotional whirlwind of an album.

It makes perfect sense now that this album took four years to be conceived. The album has been a spiritual journey of note, a meditation, and I feel exhausted, in a good way though. GAZ, you have created a masterpiece that requires other-worldly comprehension. Bravo!!
