KZN lawyer recognised in UK new year’s honours list
South African-British dual national David Warmback has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (M.B.E) for his role as Honorary Consul in Durban, South Africa.
Every year the UK’s consular service supports thousands of people in South Africa.
Since 2012, Warmback has worked alongside UK High Commission consular teams in Pretoria and Cape Town, to support British nationals, in a voluntary capacity alongside his legal profession. He uses local knowledge and contacts to offer support for difficult and complex cases, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic where he assisted in organising repatriation flights.
Warmback will receive the award at a ceremony in the UK in due course.
Welcoming the announcement of the award, UK High Commissioner to South Africa Antony Phillipson said:
“This is a truly well-deserved honour. We rely hugely on support from individuals like David with the skills, experience and enthusiasm to help those in need while in South Africa. I am delighted that his contribution has been recognised in this way.”
David Warmback remarked:
“It is a privilege for me to play a part here in Durban, amidst the larger global UK consular network. I hope that my award will shine some light on the excellent work being done by the FCDO in assisting British nationals who require assistance while abroad in foreign countries.”
