The first UK Pavilion at Semicon Taiwan demonstrates UK strength

The British Office Taipei, the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, and Innovate UK, the UK’s national innovation agency, are jointly hosting the UK’s first ever pavilion at SEMICON Taiwan this week. Showcasing 19 exciting British businesses from across the semiconductor sector and the state-of-the art Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult, the pavilion demonstrates the UK’s global leadership in key capabilities and underscores the UK’s commitment to collaborating with Taiwan in this area.

The UK possesses strengths across the semiconductor value chain, with three significant areas of strategic advantage: semiconductor design and IP, compound semiconductors, and world-leading semiconductor research capabilities, supported by a robust academic network. The UK’s National Semiconductor Strategy released earlier in May clearly stated the UK’s commitment to pursue international co-operation, to bolster UK capability and expertise in the Asia Pacific region, and to drive mutual and plurilateral-beneficial trade and investment.

John Dennis, Representative at the British Office Taipei, said at the opening of UK Pavilion today:

As global leaders in technology and innovation, with complementary expertise across the semiconductor supply chain, the UK and Taiwan are natural partners. The UK Pavilion not only showcases the potential of the UK’s thriving tech-innovation sector – it is also a symbol of our eagerness to learn from and collaborate with Taiwan’s world-renowned semiconductor industry.

The opening of the first UK Pavilion at Semicon Taiwan is also about opening the door to further collaboration between the UK and Taiwan. Through collaborating with our international partners, we hope to drive this growth and ensure that UK values, standards and objectives play a role in guiding the development of more sustainable and resilient global semiconductor supply chains.

Professor Julia Sutcliffe, Chief Scientific Adviser at the UK’s Department for Business and Trade said:

The 19 pioneering British businesses exhibiting at the UK Pavilion showcase the UK’s expertise in emerging semiconductor technologies. Within a globalised and interconnected supply chain, SEMICON Taiwan represents a unique opportunity for Taiwanese and UK businesses to work together and explore new and exciting opportunities for collaboration. Together we can leverage our shared expertise and forge long-term partnerships.

At SEMICON Taiwan today, Innovate UK and Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult also delivered a UK-specific presentation titled ‘The UK Semiconductors Landscape and Innovation Collaboration Opportunities’ outlining the UK’s ecosystem & enabling infrastructure and highlighting the UK-Taiwan collaboration opportunities.

We welcome all to visit the UK Pavilion at Semicon Taiwan by 8 September to meet British companies in the global semiconductor supply chain and explore areas for future cooperation.
