Vaughan Gething set to become next first minister of Wales after winning Welsh Labour leadership race | UK News

Vaughan Gething has won the Welsh Labour leadership race and is set to become Wales’s next first minister.

It is expected he’ll be confirmed as the country’s first minister in the coming days, after a vote of Senedd members.

Labour have exactly 30 of the Welsh parliament’s 60 seats and are currently in a cooperation agreement with Plaid Cymru, who lend support on certain government policies.

The result was announced in Cardiff.

The economy minister Mr Gething and education minister Mr Miles were the only candidates in the race to succeed Mark Drakeford.

Mr Drakeford has been first minister of Wales since 2018 but announced in December that he would step down in the new year.
