Family of man mauled to death by ‘out-of-control’ dog tell of ‘nightmare’
he family of a man mauled to death by a dog have spoken of the nightmare they “just want to wake up from.”
Wayne Stevens, 51, was killed in the attack at a house in Derby at 5.50am on Saturday.
The dog was shot dead by armed police.
His younger brother Scott lead tributes Wayne on Facebook, writing: “I can’t explain the pain. It was only 4 days since we had a beer. Love you so much.
He added: “l can’t believe my brother’s dead after a dog attack.”
His sister Debbie wrote on Facebook: “Rip to my big brother Wayne. Am absolutely devastated it doesn’t seem real. I will carry our memories and u with me forever. Look after him for us dad.”
Paying tribute to her brother, Julie Stevens said: “Still can’t believe it.
“It feels like we’re in a nightmare can’t get my head around any of this. RIP Wayne we will always love you brother.”
She wrote on Facebook: “I’m still in shock to hear the news you’ve really gone…
“Why can’t it just be a dream that we can wake up from we will love you always bro and you will forever be missed fly high in paradise until we meet again.”
Another brother Adi added: “Still can’t believe it. I think am still in a nightmare waiting to wake up.”
Gary Stevens, 53, of Cameron Road, Derby, will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
He has been charged under the Dangerous Dog Act with being the person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death.
Derbyshire Police was called to reports a man had been seriously injured at a house on Cameron Road just after 5.50am on Saturday.
The force said: “Formal identification has taken place, and the victim has been named as 51-year-old Wayne Stevens.
“Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this time.”
“His family have been made aware and our thoughts are with them at this time.
“The man arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody and a scene remains in place at a house in Cameron Road.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area as inquiries continue and officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have information.”
On Saturday, the force said “a dog at the address that was presenting a risk to officers and the public was shot and killed by firearms officers” and there was no ongoing risk to the public.
