Alcaraz vs Medvedev LIVE! Wimbledon latest score and updates from Centre Court after Novak Djokovic wins
Novak Djokovic booked his place in the Wimbledon final with a straight-sets win over Jannik Sinner, and it is now time to find out whether it will be Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev joining him on Centre Court on Sunday afternoon.
World number one Alcaraz has continued his flying form on grass at SW19, having lifted the title at Queen’s, and he has come through potentially tricky tests against Holger Rune and Matteo Berrettini with flying colours, in just his third main-draw appearance at Wimbledon.
Medvedev had never previously made it beyond the fourth round at these Championships but has his chance to reach the final, having survived a huge scare in the quarter-finals. The third seed was a tie-break away from losing to Christopher Eubanks, but battled back to win in five sets and keep his bid for a first Grand Slam title alive. Alcaraz holds a marathon game
Alcaraz 2-1 Medvedev
Alcaraz picks out a smashing serve out wide which Medvedev slices into the crowd for a member of the public to catch. Love that.
Alcaraz’s change of pace by spinning a backhand slice onto Medvedev’s racket works as the Russian nets.
STUNNING cross-court winner from Medvedev, who is flamboyant to say the least when he gears up for a big hit. But he’s then left frustrated when Alcaraz goes advantage ahead at deuce because of a net-clipper which Medvedev can’t return.
Medvedev gets immediate reprise when he cancels the advantage out with a lucky shot of his own which clipped the cord and dribbles over.
Alcaraz eventually holds.
Game Medvedev
Alcaraz 1-1 Medvedev
Medvedev aces Alcaraz to turn 30-15 into 40-15, and it’s another simple hold — this time for the Russian — when his backhand swinger beats Alcaraz to his left.
Hold to love from Alcaraz to start
Alcaraz 1-0 Medvedev
Alcaraz gets us off and running with a couple of sweet aces, before smashing a winner into the right of the court that Medvedev can’t reach. He finishes the game off with an ace. What a start.
The players are out
Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz are in the house! They are on Centre Court and about to begin their warm-up. Not long to go now!
Next up…
Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev!
Top seed versus the third seed, with both looking to reach the Wimbledon final for the first time.
They will both be out on Centre Court very shortly.
GAME, SET AND MATCH!
Two match points! Djokovic just does not blink in the biggest moments. Sinner has throughout this match, again he’s right in the rally but dumps a forehand into the net. 6-4.
Djokovic needs only one! Sinner into the net for the final time and Djokovic has his straight-sets win! 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 47 minutes.
Big ovation as the players cross over. Don’t tell Djokovic, but don’t think much of it is for him.
Sensational from Djokovic! Reacts to the net cord, and then brilliant reactions at the net. 4-3… celebrates by smashing a ball into the grass.
He’s face down in it now though, slips behind the baseline as Sinner slaps a forehand winner past him. 4-4. It’s very, very tense.
Huge point, and potentially the decisive moment. Sinner’s backhand into the net and Djokovic leads 5-4, with two serves to come.
Perfect start for Sinner. First serve in and Djokovic can’t get the return back in play. 1-0.
And the Italian has a mini-break, jumps all over the second serve and powers a backhand down the line. 2-0. Not so good that time from Sinner though, frames the backhand and it flies out. 2-1.
Big serve out wide, again Djokovic can’t neutralise it. 3-1. But Sinner then gifts the mini-break back, double fault at an awful time. 3-2.
3-3 heading to the changeover, backhand from Sinner is long.
Tie-break time!
Sinner 3-6 4-6 6-6 Djokovic
Sinner’s return is deep… too deep. Challenge shows it was indeed out. So is that though from Djokovic, drags the backhand. 15-15. Djokovic will be very relieved if he wins the match in straight sets, he’s dropped off in the last 15 minutes.
Sinner dominates the rally, Djokovic on the stretch and can only float the slice beyond the baseline. 30-30. Sinner two points away from the set.
Serve lands bang on the line and skids on, Sinner almost swings at thin air. And a brilliant forehand winner from Djokovic takes us to a tie-break! The defending champion is quite good at these…
