Man Utd face competition from Premier League rival for £50m PSG target

Manchester United are targeting Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte as they look to strengthen their midfield options.

However, they face competition from another Premier League club for his signature. Sources in Paris claim United have in fact already made an offer for the 23-year-old Uruguayan, one that was immediately rejected as it was “nowhere near” PSG’s valuation of the player they only signed last summer.

United insiders have denied any bid has been submitted, but made clear their interest is genuine.

One other Premier League club have contacted PSG to enquire about Ugarte, with Bayern Munich and a Serie A side also in touch.

If PSG are going to sell, i understands the club want to recoup above the €60m (£50m) fee they paid Sporting Lisbon for his services last summer. They are aware that so much interest already will drive his price up.

Ugarte, who is part of Uruguay’s Copa America squad, made 34 appearances in all competitions for PSG last season. He is seen as a key young player for the French champions, but they could sell if the price is right.

It is unclear at this stage whether United will be able to stretch that far, given their limited transfer budget as they struggle to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

They want to strengthen their midfield, with Casemiro almost certain to depart in the close season. Saudi Arabian clubs remain interested in the veteran Brazilian.

Much will depend on whether United can sell some of their unwanted stars. Three Italian clubs are preparing offers for Mason Greenwood, i understands, while Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are reportedly heading to Turkey. Jadon Sancho is another player the club are looking to move on to raise funds to boost the transfer pot, but there have been no approaches as yet.

A striker and central defender are the other top priorities for United this summer.

Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee, who is with the Netherlands squad at the European Championships, has been identified as the ideal profile to ease Rasmus Hojlund’s workload at Old Trafford.

Talks are advancing with the 23-year-old’s representatives, with United understood to be willing to meet Zirkzee’s £34m release clause.

United have also contacted Lille over the availability of Jonathan David but they are yet to make a bid.

Chelsea have also joined the race to sign the Canada international, as they switch their attentions away from Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.

That £40m switch, which appeared all but done, has stalled over wage demands and issues with temperament, i understands.

A central defender is another must for United this summer, with Raphael Varane having departed. They submitted a £35m offer for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite last week, which was rejected.

They are unlikely to return with a second bid unless Everton drop their asking price – something the Toffees are reluctant to do at this stage.
