Barcelona respond to Lionel Messi snub

In case you missed it, here is Barcelona’s public response to Lionel Messi deciding to join Inter Miami.

“On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and representative, informed Club President Joan Laporta of the player’s decision to join Inter Miami, despite having been presented with a proposal from Barça, in consideration of the desire of both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi for him to once again wear blaugrana.

“President Laporta understood and respected Messi’s decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years.

“Both Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a proper tribute from Barça fans to honor a footballer who has been, is, and always will be beloved by Barça.”

Messi explains snubbing Saudis and Barcelona for Inter Miami

In case you somehow managed to miss this last night, Lionel Messi is NOT following the likes of great rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to Saudi Arabia.

The Argentine icon has turned down a reported mammoth £344m offer from Al Hilal to head to America and Major League Soccer (MLS) instead, specifically David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

Messi has also rejected the idea of a fairytale return to Barcelona.

“If it had been a matter of money, I’d have gone to Arabia or elsewhere. It seemed like a lot of money to me. The truth is that my final decision goes elsewhere and not because of money,” he explained.

On not going back to Barca, Messi told Catalan newspapers Sport and Mundo Deportivo: “The truth is that I had offers from another European team, but I didn’t even evaluate it because in Europe my only idea was to go to Barcelona.

“After winning the World Cup and not being able to go to Barça, it was time to go to the United States League to live football differently.

“I want to enjoy more the day to day. Obviously with the same responsibility and desire to want to win and to always do things well. But more calmly.

“I wanted to return to Barcelona but I did not want to leave my future hanging in the hands of other people.

“I heard that they [Barca] had to sell players or lower players’ salaries and the truth is that I didn’t want to go through that.

“Hopefully, I don’t know when or what or when but hopefully one day I can still contribute something at Barcelona and help because it’s a club that I love as I always said.

“I appreciate the love I had from people during my career and I would like to be there again, yes.”

Man United prepare Mason Mount bid

Manchester United are preparing their first bid for Mason Mount, according to the latest reports.

The England midfielder is high on the list of transfer priorities at Old Trafford this summer as Erik ten Hag pushes for an early deal to beat the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool to the punch.

Chelsea are known to be demanding £70m for Mount, out of contract next summer with no sign of an extension, but United are hoping for a deal closer to the £40m or £50m mark.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United are now prepping their opening offer for the 24-year-old, with Mount keen on the deal.

It remains to be seen though if that sizeable gap in valuations can be successfully bridged between the two clubs.

Arsenal start talks to sign Joao Cancelo

In case you missed this last night, Arsenal appear to have started talks over Joao Cancelo.

With the success of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus in north London, the Gunners are going back to title rivals Manchester City for more players this summer, also possessing a strong interest in FA Cup final hero Ilkay Gundogan.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal have now begun engaging in early verbal discussions to sign Portuguese wing-back Cancelo, who is somewhat in limbo after a loan move to Bayern Munich did not turn into a permanent deal.

He also does not appear to be part of Pep Guardiola’s plans for the future at City.

Chelsea want Andre Onana swap deal

Chelsea want to make Andre Onana their new first-choice goalkeeper.

The Blues are targeting a new No1 this summer for new manager Mauricio Pochettino, with both Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga facing uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

Onana has long since emerged as a target along with the likes of Gregor Kobel at Borussia Dortmund and Brentford’s David Raya.

Per Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, Chelsea could now offer midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek as part of the deal to sign Inter’s Cameroon international.

What a blow that would be for AC Milan, to have a key target in Loftus-Cheek – surplus to requirements in Pochettino’s looming Chelsea overhaul – snatched away by their biggest rivals.

Arsenal get new Declan Rice update

Arsenal are expected to step up their interest in Declan Rice after West Ham’s Europa Conference League final win.

And the Gunners got an update from their top summer transfer target after the Hammers’ late heroics to see off Fiorentina on an eventful night in Prague.

“Look, at the moment there’s obviously a lot of speculation going on about my future,” Rice told BT Sport.

“Obviously there is interest from other clubs, that’s out there, but ultimately I’ve still got two years left at West Ham.

“I love this club, I love playing for this club, there hasn’t been nothing yet.

“So my focus is playing for West Ham, enjoying tonight and seeing what happens.

“I’m captain of this club and I absolutely love it to pieces, I cannot speak highly enough of this place and let’s just see what happens.”
