When is the Ashes 2nd Test? Start date and times for next England vs Australia match at Lord’s

There has been an odd satisfaction about a first Test that, so interrupted by rain, has lost little of its sparkle. Should England win or lose, Bazball has been a triumph for its sheer theatre alone.

Steve “we saw you cry on the telly” Smith is probably as pleased as anyone to be moving on from the Hollies, with the second Test taking place at Lord’s and starting on 28 June.

England may be forced into some changes, with Moeen Ali nursing a finger injury and heading into the pavilion for treatment on the penultimate day at Edgbaston.

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes will also have to toy with how they deploy James Anderson and Stuart Broad, with both indicating they do not expect to play all five Tests.

However, Moeen’s setback could herald the return of Mark Wood with England relying on only part-time spinners.

It has been largely been an unfortunate comeback for Moeen regardless, notwithstanding his dismissals of Travis Head and Cameron Green – though McCullum had accepted a little rust was inevitable having handed him his first Test cap since he quit the international scene in 2021.

It has been a welcome sight to see Stokes fit to bowl at least after months of uncertainty over his knee injury.

What has been in no doubt, however, is that the skipper will continue to abide by his “no draws” mentality. The England captain knew on day one that his shock declaration would be judged on its results and but for the weather, the first Test would almost certainly have not lasted the duration, for better or worse.

Indeed from Zak Crawley’s first-ball cover drive to Joe Root reverse scooping his first ball of the morning, Lord’s will have an incredibly tough act to follow.

We have seen everything from the majestic – Usman Khawaja and Root’s first innings centuries – to the chaotic, Ollie Robinson screaming at Khawaja and refusing to apologise. It’s already shaping up to be quite the summer.
