Full order of play for Tuesday, what time it starts and how to watch in UK

WIMBLEDON — Carlos Alcaraz will hope not to give Jeremy Chardy too warm a send-off after his first-round opponent at Wimbledon announced his retirement.

Chardy, 36, turned professional in 2005 and has been as high as 25 in the world, but has now dropped outside the top 500 after an 18-month hiatus due to an adverse reaction to a Covid-19 vaccine.

The Frenchman is now a London resident and a regular hitting partner for British players at the National Tennis Centre at Roehampton and the Queen’s Club, so is glad to be making his singles farewell in what has become his adopted home.

“It’s a special week for me,” Chardy said.

“It started a bit here, I won in juniors.

“I didn’t play Roland [Garros] to try to prepare for here. I have my whole family coming, I’m playing against the world No 1 on one of the most beautiful courts. It will be a great end no matter what.

How to watch Wimbledon 2023

As is tradition, the BBC will show every match played at Wimbledon over the course of the next fortnight.

The tournament runs from Monday 3 July to Sunday 16 July and play will start at 11am most days, with coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

Multi-court coverage is also available to stream via BBC iPlayer, the red button, the BBC Sport website and app.

As for the highlights they can be found every evening on BBC Two and all of the above platforms from 8.30pm onwards.

“After the difficult period that happened to me, I did not want to stop outside the court. I went into fight mode to try to come back and try to play again.

“It’s not perfect. There are more days when it’s hard than days when I’m having fun. I will try to give my all. I wanted to end here.”

As top seed and world No 1, Alcaraz might have expected to be on Centre Court, but with the tradition that the women’s champion opens Tuesday and that men and women alternate on Wimbledon’s biggest court, there is only room for one match and two-time champion Andy Murray takes priority.

Alcaraz, who instead will start at 1pm on No 1 Court, remains a firm second-favourite for the title behind Novak Djokovic, who opened Centre Court on Monday with a straight-sets win.

But the Spaniard hopes the good form that powered him to the Queen’s title will send shockwaves across the draw.

“I’m coming here to Wimbledon with a lot of confidence, thinking that I’m able to do a good results here. But obviously for me the main favorite is Djokovic. That’s obvious,” Alcaraz said.

“But my expectations are high. I think I will be able to put the pressure on the other players, even Djokovic as well.”

Ones to watch

With no room for Alcaraz, two Brits will take Centre Court stage after defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina starts her title defence American Shelby Rogers.

Andy Murray plays just his second all-British match at Wimbledon when taking on compatriot Ryan Peniston. Murray has won the trophy twice here, while Peniston has played just two matches at these championships – both last year when he reached the second round.

Away from the main show courts, keep an eye on outside contender for the men’s singles Sebastian Korda, the No 22 seed who is up against Jiri Vesely on Court 8, while two-time champion Petra Kvitova is once more capable of going the distance and starts her campaign against Jasmine Paolini out on No 2 Court.

Upsetwatch

Rybakina’s fitness is certainly a concern after she withdrew from Eastbourne, and as a two-time grand slam quarter-finalist Rogers is certainly capable of an upset on Centre Court. With Rogers the world No 33, Rybakina could not have asked for a tougher unseeded opponent on paper.

Women’s No 8 seed Maria Sakkari also faces a difficult task in what as arguably a match-up too close to call against Marta Kostyuk. Sakkari has a 8-6 record at Wimbledon and is yet to reach the fourth round, while 21-year-old Kostyuk is ranked No 36 and has one WTA title under her belt this year.

In the men’s singles, No 6 seed Holger Rune is ever-improving but far from the finished article on grass, and having lost on his debut last year the 20-year-old is hoping to overcome Briton George Loffhagen, the 22-year-old world No 371 who is playing in his first grand slam.

Brits in action

As well as Murray-Peniston and Loffhagen, a further five British players are in singles action on Tuesday.

British men’s No 1 Cameron Norrie plays qualifier Tomas Machac. Norrie made the Wimbledon semi-finals last year and starts this campaign as the last out on No 1 Court.

Fellow British No 1 Katie Boulter is first up on Court 18, with the 26-year-old who reached a career-high No 77 in the world last month hoping to go better than her run to the third round of Wimbledon last year. She takes on Daria Saville, the 29-year-old Australian who has progressed beyond the first round just twice from six attempts.

Two Brits take to No 2 Court, with Heather Watson playing No 10 seed Barbora Krejcikova in the third match before fellow wildcard Arthur Fery faces a mammoth task in No 3 seed Daniil Medvedev.

It will also be a big ask for Sonay Kartal, last out on No 3 Court against No 25 seed Madison Keys.
