Are shops open on Boxing Day? Supermarket bank holiday opening hours

Christmas is just days away, meaning fridges up and down the country are stocked with turkeys, sprouts and pigs in blankets.

But if you cannot exist on leftovers alone in the days following Christmas, you will need to be aware of supermarkets’ opening hours.

Hours are reduced over the festive period due to bank holidays, and on Boxing Day many shops will only be open for limited hours, if at all.

Here are the Christmas opening times for each major chain.

Tesco

• Christmas Day – all stores closed
• Boxing Day – most supermarkets open from 9am to 6pm, convenience stores open to 7pm
• New Year’s Eve – most supermarkets open 10am to 4pm
• New Year’s Day – most supermarkets open 9am to 6pm

• Boxing Day – supermarkets will be open 9am to 6pm and convenience stores from 9am to 9pm

• New Year’s Day – majority of stores will be open between 8am to 8pm and convenience stores will be open between 8am and 9pm
