One person dead and another injured after stabbing in Bordeaux

One person has died and another has been injured after a stabbing in Bordeaux, local media have said.

According to BFM TV, police were called to the scene at around 8pm on Wednesday night. It is reported that the attacker was shot dead by officers as he tried to flee.

Police cordoned off the area along the Garonne River near the famous Miroir d’eau reflecting pool outside the Place de la Bourse following the attack.

The motive of the attacker and his identity is not yet known but police do not believe it to be terrorism-related at this time.

The condition of the injured victim is unknown.

Footage circulating on social media purported to show the aftermath of the scene as a large crowd circled what appeared to be a victim. The perimeter was quickly sealed off by police.

Mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic said he was immediately attending the site of the attack to collect information from the public prosecutor. He confirmed a judicial investigation into the incident was underway.

“Deeply shocked by this knife attack on one of the busiest places in #Bordeaux,” Nicolas Florian, a city councillor and former Bordeaux mayor wrote on X.

“I send all my support to the victims and witnesses of this tragedy. I salute the intervention of our law enforcement officers who shot the maniac down.”

It comes after France was placed on its highest state of security alert ahead of hosting the Olympic games in the summer.

Minutes before the attack Paris St-Germain and Barcelona were preparing to face each other in the Champions League quarter-final in the French Capital. Security was significantly increased around the game following a threat from Islamic State.
