Sunak says HS2 costs ‘are enormous’ ahead of announcement to axe Manchester leg

Rishi Sunak’s first Conservative Party conference as Prime Minister is being railroaded by the debate over the future of HS2.

Mr Sunak is facing a backlash from Tories, businesses and northern leaders over reports that the Manchester-Birmingham leg of the high speed rail link will be scrapped.

Mr Sunak is due to hold an emergency Cabinet meeting to sign off the measures during his party conference – held in the city most directly hit by the cut.
