Met Office predictions for bank holiday weekend and if it will rain on Saturday

It may literally rain on the King’s parade, with forecasters expecting showers on Saturday – the day of his coronation.

The official coronation ceremony will see King Charles III and Queen Camilla parade through central London, before the official crowning at Westminster Abbey.

Thousands of people will flock to London to watch the procession, while millions more will tune in to watch the event on television.

But those who head to the capital to line the streets and gather in parks could be in for damp celebrations if the Met Office‘s early forecast is anything to go by.

What is the national weather forecast?

The Met Office said Saturday will likely bring showers to many areas, with the heaviest of these expected across central and eastern areas. These showers could also turn thundery.

There will be light winds for many, though there is the potential for some gusty conditions further north.

Unfortunately it does not project to be a bright and dry bank holiday, with rain likely to disrupt plans through the long weekend.

“Unsettled conditions persist through Sunday and Monday with a continuing risk of showers or thunderstorms, but with increased uncertainty around the areas most likely to see the heaviest of these,” the Met Office said.

“The generally unsettled theme is most likely to continue for the remainder of next week, with a chance of rain or showers interspersed with some drier periods, the best of which could be in the north and east. Temperatures generally around normal, perhaps a little above normal at times.”

What is the forecast for London?

Met Office spokesperson, Nicola Maxey, said: “We’ve got quite a showery picture. Friday is going to be a mixture of heavy rain and showers and thunderstorms.”

She said London may stay dry on Saturday morning, but that showers may develop through the afternoon.

“At the moment it looks like, as I say, the morning should be relatively dry with some sunny spells in London, but the afternoon could see showers developing in London.

“The message is to keep an eye on the forecast and check it regularly because the detail will become clearer as we get nearer to the day.”

Despite rain being likely, it is expected to be warm and humid with temperatures reaching as high as 20ºC.

“We could certainly see temperatures, high teens, maybe 20ºC for London, and mid to high teens for elsewhere in the country as well,” Ms Maxey said.

“Whether you feel warm or not will depend on whether you get a break in the cloud and a spell of sunshine, in which case it’s going to feel great, but under a shower it might not feel as nice.”
