Latest as union says he escaped Wandsworth prison when less than 100 officers on duty
The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) has blamed Government budget cuts for prison understaffing, revealing that there should have been at least 20 extra officers on shift when Daniel Khalife escaped from Wandsworth on Wednesday.
Police have refused to rule out that Khalife has left the country, or that he had outside help to escape prison, as the search for the fugitive terror suspect enters its third day.
Khalife, who was on remand ahead of his terror trial, was meant to be working in the kitchens when he sneaked out and strapped himself underneath a truck delivering food and supplies, prompting extra security checks at major transport hubs.
