Donald Trump expected to have gun licence revoked following conviction, reports say

Donald Trump is expected to have his gun licence revoked by the New York City Police department after he was found guilty of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment, US media have reported.

The former president’s licence had already been suspended upon his indictment in March 2023, an NYPD spokesperson told NBC News.

It is not clear when Trump last held a gun, but his licence for New York City was active at the time of his indictment, the spokesperson added.

CNN, which first reported the story, said two of the three pistols he was licensed to carry were turned over to the police department on 31 March 2023. They said a third gun listed on his license “was lawfully moved to Florida”.

Gun licences are often revoked after convictions, but Trump could challenge the revocation, it said.

The former president once famously told a rally that he would not lose supporters even if he shot someone.

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters,” he told a rally in Iowa in January 2016.  “It’s, like, incredible,” he said.

Last month Trump became the first former – or serving – US president to be convicted of a crime.

He was found guilty of all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, in charges punishable by up to four years in prison.

Sentencing is due to take place on 11 July – three days before the start of the Republican National Convention is expected to formally nominate Trump for president.
