Evacuations ordered for parts of Corfu due to wildfires
Evacuations are being ordered from a second Greek island, Corfu, due to wildfires.
Greece’s Emergency Communications Service has ordered evacuations for some parts of the island, including people in Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia Perithia and Sinies has been advised to leave and head to Kasiopi.
Thousands of tourists and residents have fled the Greek Island of Rhodes on Sunday, taking refuge in schools and shelters. Many have been evacuated on private boats as flames threatened resorts and coastal villages.
Authorities said 19,000 people were moved from homes to hotels overnight as fires burning since last Wednesday tore through forests.
Tour operators Jet2, Tui and Thomas Cook cancelled flights and holidays to Rhodes in the situation.
Fires have been raging in Greece for the past week as an intense heatwave crosses Southern Europe. Fires have spread across Dervenohoria, Kouvaras, Lagonisi and Loutraki, where around 1,200 children in a summer camp were evacuated.
