Latest news with red weather alerts issued for Italy, Spain and Croatia as 47°C forecast

A heatwave that has been scorching southern Europe is set to intensify on Wednesday, the World Meteorological Organisation has warned.

The number of red alerts for extreme heat in Italian cities will rise from 23 to 27 as Sardinia is expected to record temperatures above 47°C.

Red alerts have also been issued in north-eastern Spain, Croatia, Serbia, southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, while wildfires continue to rage across Greece.
