Earthquake rocks Greece with 5.7 magnitude tremors felt in holiday hotspots

An earthquake struck southern Greece off the coast of the western Peloponnese on Good Friday, with tremors felt in popular holiday hotspots including the capital Athens.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck at 7.12am, which was also felt in the southern island of Crete.

The quake was centred near the Strofades islands, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

Efthymios Lekkas, president of Greeceā€™s earthquake planning and protection organisation, said tremors reached other areas popular with holidaymakers including the islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia.

ā€œHowever, it is an earthquake that does not appear to have an impact on building infrastructure and people,ā€ he told the news website Greek Reporter.

Greece is located in a highly seismically active area and earthquakes are common, with the vast majority of them causing no injuries and little damage.
