Greta Thunberg charged with a public order offence

Environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg has been charged with a public order offence after a protest outside a central London hotel on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Ms Thunberg was among 20 other protesters to have been charged with failing to comply with Section 14 of the Public Order Act ā€“ allowing officers to ā€œpreventā€ protestors having a ā€œsignificant impact on [other] personsā€.

Five other fellow protestors were handed a different charge

Ms Thunberg was bailed to appear at Westminster Magistratesā€™ Court on 15 November.

The Swedish campaigner had joined a protest outside of the InterContinental Hotel on Park Lane where oil executives were meeting on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Met Police said it had imposed conditions on the activists under Section 14 of the Public Order Act, to ā€œprevent serious disruption to the community, hotel and guestsā€, and had asked them to move from the road and on to the pavement.

It said that ā€œa number of protesters failed to do soā€, which resulted in six arrests for obstruction of the highway, a further 14 arrests for Section 14 breaches and one for criminal damage.
