Ground vehicle catches fire next to British Airways plane at Heathrow Airport

A ground vehicle caught fire next to a British Airways plane parked on the runway at Heathrow airport.

Footage showed flames engulfing the small truck, which was stationed near the tail of the empty aircraft as it extended a mobile staircase to allow passengers to board.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen seen billowing above several terminal buildings at the UK’s busiest airport.

Heathrow’s fire service used multiple water jets to put out the blaze at about 6.15pm. There were no injuries.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “Emergency services quickly extinguished a small fire of a third party ground vehicle.

“No customers were impacted and there were no injuries.”

Passengers were queuing to board the Airbus A320 flight to Naples when the fire broke out, the Sun reported.

The aircraft affected, registered as G-EUYO, last flew in to Heathrow from Athens at 5.14pm.

A spokeswoman for Heathrow Airport said the fire was put out promptly, confirming that there were no passengers on board at the time of the incident.
