Hamas leader refuses to admit killing civilians in Israel one month after attack

A senior Hamas leader has refused to admit that his organisation killed civilians in Israel, claiming only “conscripts or soldiers” were targeted.

Moussa Abu Marzouk told the BBC that women, children and civilians were “exempt” from the 7 October attacks.

Israel has said that most of the 1,400 people killed were civilians, and video evidence suggests Hamas gunmen shot at unarmed women and children.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will have “security responsibility” for Gaza once the fighting ends.

He resisted calls for a ceasefire but said humanitarian pauses could be possible to allow aid in and Israeli hostages out.
