Hamburg Police shoot man with axe threatening officers ahead of Euro match

German Police have shot a man with an axe close to a Euros fan zone in Hamburg.

The incident occurred in the St Pauli area of the city, where police said the man had threatened officers.

The suspect was shot and is now receiving medical treatment, police said.

A statement read: “At St Pauli there is currently a major police operation. According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device.

“The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.”

The condition of the suspect is not known at this time.

A heavy police presence has been visible across Germany for the start of the Euros.

Holland is set to play against Poland at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, with the city’s fan park situated in the St Pauli district.
