How did my MP vote on the Rwanda bill? Full list as Sunak defeats rebels

After hours of debate, Rishi Sunak’s controversial Rwanda bill was passed 320 to 276 – a majority of 44 – on Wednesday night.

In a highly anticipated vote, the Prime Minister saw off threats from Tory rebels to pass his draft deportation legislation.

It came after senior Tories Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith resigned from their positions on Tuesday in protest over the Bill.

After a last-minute meeting in Parliament on Tuesday night, Sunak managed to win the backing again of his party members.

More than 60 Tory MPs had earlier supported an amendment designed to toughen the draft law, voting for a proposal designed to allow UK ministers to ignore emergency injunctions by European judges attempting to stop asylum seeker deportation flights to east Africa from taking off.

But an amendment lodged by former immigration minister, Robert Jenrick, failed to pass through the Commons, with 536 people voting against it.

What is the Rwanda bill?

To recap, the Safety of the Rwanda Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 7 December, 2023, as the Government wants to send to Rwanda some people who arrive illegally in the UK seeking asylum.

It came after the UK and the African nation announced a Migration and Economic Development Partnership in April 2022, which includes a “asylum partnership arrangement”’ under which Britain can ask Rwanda to assume responsibility for some people who would otherwise claim asylum in the UK.

However, a Supreme Court ruling last year found there were substantial grounds for believing sending asylum seekers to Rwanda may not be safe as they could face persecution. The plan was deemed unlawful, and the Government signed a new treaty with Rwanda containing additional safeguards for people relocated there.

Parliament was asked to consider legislation declaring that Rwanda must be treated as safe, so the relocation plan is rendered lawful in UK domestic law.

There are a number of reasons why an MP may not vote in the Commons ranging from illness, being away on a Parliamentary visit or being paired with a member of another party who could not attend.

Some MPs may also abstain because they do not agree with the party position, but do not want to defy the party whip.
