Huw Edwards arrives at court for sentencing after admitting child abuse image charges

Former BBC news reader Huw Edwards has arrived at court to be sentenced for accessing indecent images of children as young as seven.

The 63-year-old arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday wearing a navy blue cardigan, open collar white shirt and dark trousers.

The veteran broadcaster has pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images related to 41 photographs he was sent via WhatsApp. He is due to find out if he will serve jail time later today.

If Edwards does get sentenced to prison, the maximum he could get from the magistrates’ court is 12 months.

Outside the courthouse, a small group of protestors gathered outside the court house accusing the BBC of covering up paedophilia, accusations strenuously denied by the public broadcaster.

The BBC said it knew of Edwards’ arrest over accessing indecent images of children in November but continued employing him until April.

Edwards committed the offences between December 2020 and August 2021, Westminster Magistrates’ Court previously heard.

During this period, the court heard he had been involved in an online chat with convicted paedophile Alex Williams on WhatsApp, who sent him 377 sexual images, of which 41 were indecent images of children. The majority of these, 36, were sent during a two-month period.

On 2 February, 2021, the man asked Edwards if what he was sending was too young, and Edwards responded by telling him not to send any underage images, the court heard.

Williams was charged in relation to his WhatsApp chat with Edwards and was convicted of seven offences following an investigation by South Wales Police – receiving a 12-month suspended sentence.

This is a moving story and is being updated.
