Israel tells UN 1.1 million Palestinians have 24 hours to leave northern Gaza
Israel has told the United Nations (UN) that 1.1 million Palestinians have 24 hours to leave northern Gaza.
But a spokesperson for the UN Secretary General said the task would be âimpossible without devastating humanitarian consequencesâ and urged Israel to revoke the evacuation orders.
It comes as Israel is expected to launch a ground offensive into Gaza to destroy the militant group Hamas after attacks at the weekend killed 1,300 people. At least 130 more Israelis have been taken hostage and held captive in Gaza.
More than 1,400 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched retaliatory air strikes, Palestinian health officials said.
Israel has also imposed a total blockade on Gaza, cutting off food, water and fuel supplies, leaving Palestinian families with just days worth of water.
