King arrives at Buckingham Palace from Sandringham after first cancer treatment
King Charles has returned to London from his Sandringham estate following his first treatment for cancer.
Charles and Queen Camilla flew by helicopter from Norfolk to Buckingham Palace, and were driven the short distance to Clarence House.
Last week, the Palace revealed that the 75-year-old head of state has a “form of cancer” and had started a schedule of “regular treatments”.
The King will postpone public duties on the advice of his doctors but will continue to undertake state business.
At the weekend Charles issued a statement praising “all those organisations which support cancer patients”.
In his first public address since the diagnosis was made public, he said: “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days.”
The following day he attended church, briefly waving to photographers as he walked up to St Mary Magdalene’s holding an umbrella and accompanied by Camilla.
The Queen said Charles had been “very touched” by all the messages of support he has received from the public.
The King, who acceded to the throne just 17 months ago, was diagnosed with cancer following a hospital visit for a separate health concern in January.
During his treatment for benign prostate enlargement, another issue was noted and subsequent diagnostic tests identified cancer.
Buckingham Palace has confirmed the King does not have prostate cancer, but has not disclosed which type of cancer he has.
The form of treatment Charles is receiving has not been revealed.
The Duke of Sussex, who was personally informed of the diagnosis by his father, boarded a flight from California to be with the King following the public announcement.
The Prime Minister, who has continued his regular correspondence with the King, said he was left “shocked and sad” when he was told about the King’s cancer diagnosis.
He added: “Thankfully, this has been caught early.”
