Seven dead as Kyiv children’s hospital hit in Russian hypersonic missile attack

Russia has launched a deadly hypersonic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, striking a children’s hospital and killing at least seven people.

The attack on Kyiv was one of the worst during the two-year full-scale invasion by Moscow, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

“This is one of the worst attacks. You can see: it’s a children’s hospital,” he told Reuters as he stood near a heavily damaged building.

The daylight strike on Okhmatdyt children’s hospital, one of several deadly barrage attacks unleashed this morning on the war-torn nation, used one of Russia’s most advanced weapons, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, the Ukrainian airforce said. The missile travels 10 times the speed of sound, making it almost impossible to intercept.

The Kremlin also launched a separate attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, where at least 10 people are dead, AP reported.

Ukraine’s President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had targeted five cities in total, using some 40 different missile types.

At least 20 people have been killed in the swathe of attacks throughout Ukraine, and a further 50 have been injured, Ukraine’s interior minister said.

President Zelenskyy branded the strikes a “genocidal” attack and many were still trapped under the rubble of Kyiv children’s hospital.

“There are people under the rubble, and the exact number of casualties is still unknown. Right now, everyone is helping to clear the rubble – doctors and ordinary people,” the president wrote on X.

He added: “Russia cannot claim ignorance of where its missiles are flying and must be held fully accountable for all its crimes. Against people, against children, against humanity in general. It is very important that the world does not remain silent about this now, and that everyone sees what Russia is and what it is doing.”

The other strikes across Ukraine included Dnipro, Slov’yansk and Krematorsk – as well as Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy’s birthplace.
