Labour and Starmer look on course to run Britain

i readers say they want to know what a Labour government would do. We scrutinise their promises – and tell it to you straight

Who are Labour? Streets ahead in the polls, Sir Keir Starmer is currently on course to become prime minister next year, with Rachel Reeves running the Treasury. But if they win power, what will they do?

Labour chiefs are cautious about saying too much. The next PM’s economic inheritance will be lousy, so there is limited room for manoeuvre – 2024 will not be 1997 all over again.

However, at i we hold all politicians to account. Our job is to scrutinise their promises – and tell it to you straight. Only one national newspaper has never endorsed a political party.

i readers say they want to know what a Labour government would do. So we have launched a reporting project, Labour’s Plan For Power, that starts today with a new podcast and this edition of iweekend. You may have heard about the pod on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

In the podcast, i’s chief political commentator Paul Waugh explores what Labour will actually do if Starmer is elected PM. He questions senior Labour figures about Britain’s future, as well as former ministers who know the challenges and perils of government.

Each episode is packed with news lines. In episode one, about your money, former Tory chancellor Ken Clarke backs Reeves to run the economy, saying that she would be “reassuring” and “responsible”. We also hear from Reeves.

Labour’s Plan For Power is out now on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. It’s part of i’s commitment to quality audio journalism, as well as the written word. Please do let Paul or me know what you think. You can reach us on X (formerly Twitter) @paulwaugh and @olyduff, or by email on [email protected].

Visit inews.co.uk/labour-plan to listen to the podcast. More news on episode 2 soon!
