Travel chaos continues after thousands left without power

Thousands of homes were left without power as high winds, heavy rain and snow from Storm Gerrit wreaked havoc on UK travel networks.

Parts of Scotland experienced significant heavy snow and power lines downed by falling trees, branches and other debris, with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks warning that 16,000 homes remained without power on Thursday morning.

People attempting to get home after the Christmas break on Thursday have been warned of a knock-on impact on roads and rail following widespread disruption during Storm Gerrit.
