Tory grandees seek to curb rebellion over Rwanda vote
Rishi Sunak will attempt to avoid a mass rebellion by right-wing Tory MPs against his Rwanda plan on Tuesday, as he struggles to reconcile the competing demands of different Conservative factions.
Tory grandees have sought to curb the rebellion, including former Conservative Party leader William Hague, who warned in a column in the Times that if MPs do not pass the bill âthey are going into oppositionâ. Ben Wallace, the former defence secretary, appealed for calm in the Telegraph, warning that a rebellion would âwreck the Governmentâ.
Around 20 members of the New Conservatives, a right-wing group of mainly âRed Wallâ MPs which formed earlier this year, will attend a breakfast with Mr Sunak in Number 10 later this morning, as ministers engage in a last-ditch attempt to win over party colleagues and avert a humiliating defeat at the second reading.
