Death toll reaches 11,000 amid desperate rescue mission

The Libyan Red Crescent says the number of people who died in the city of Derna when torrential rain brought by Storm Daniel caused two nearby dams to fail has risen to 11,000.

Thousands more people are still missing, and Derna’s mayor Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi has said that the death toll could reach 20,000.

Survivors have described horrifying experiences as the water surged through their city, washing away loved ones before their eyes.
