Man arrested in Paisley after police officer ‘chased by suspect with chainsaw’

A man has been arrested by Scottish police after video footage shared on social media appeared to show an officer being chased with a chainsaw.

Police Scotland said a “disturbance involving a weapon” took place following a crash involving a car and a police vehicle in Paisley, near Glasgow, on Monday.

A 30-year-old man was arrested. Two officers were hurt and treated by paramedics for injuries.

Video shared online on Monday afternoon appeared to showed a man running down Paisley’s Glasgow Road with a chainsaw, with a police officer seen running away.

Other footage showed a suspect being subdued by several officers on the quiet residential street.

Video and photos also shared online showed a marked police car that had crashed into the wall near the scene.

An eyewitness told the Daily Record that a black car collided with a police vehicle before a man got out and allegedly chased officers with an electric chainsaw.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: “Around 1pm on Monday, 6 May 2024, a disturbance involving a weapon occurred following a collision involving a car and a stationary police vehicle on Glasgow Road in Paisley.”

The force added: “Two officers were injured and were treated by paramedics. A 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.”

Residents were reassured there is no wider risk to the public after the incident. Officers remained at the scene to make ongoing enquires.

The road was closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue on Monday afternoon, with drivers being asked to avoid the area.
