Nancy Pelosi hospitalised after injury on Luxembourg trip
Pelosi’s office said she was ‘receiving excellent treatment’ from medical professionals but did not disclose her injury
Nancy Pelosi has been taken to hospital after suffering an injury during a trip to Luxembourg on Friday.
The former speaker of the US House of Representatives was travelling with the congressional delegation for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge – the last major German offensive during the Second World War – when she was injured.
“Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” Ian Krager, a spokesperson for the 84-year-old congresswoman, said.
Pelosi’s office did not confirm how she was injured or offer details about her diagnosis, but said she was “receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals”.
“She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the [congressional delegation] engagements to honour the courage of our service members during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” the statement added.
The San Francisco congresswoman is the first woman to serve as speaker of the House of Representatives – a role which she held from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
After announcing her resignation from the influential position in November last year, Pelosi continued to serve in the House and was elected to represent her San Francisco district in Congress for a further two-year term beginning on 3 January 2025.
Pelosi was also leader of the Democrats in the House from 2003 to 2023, paving the way as the first woman to lead a major political party in either chamber of Congress.
During her time as Speaker, she played a prominent role in passing a $1.9 trillion pandemic aid package in 2021 as well as a $750 billion health care, energy and climate bill in August 2022.
Pelosi’s injury comes just days after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, sprained his wrist and suffered cuts to his face after falling at the US Capitol.
