Pressure mounts on Rishi Sunak to stop arms sales to Israel

Labour has urged the Government to publish any legal advice on whether Israel has broken international law during its assault on Gaza as pressure grows on Rishi Sunak to suspend arms sales.

Shadow foreign secretary David Lammy said: “The law is clear. British arms licences cannot be granted if there is a clear risk that the items might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

It comes after former foreign secretary Jack Straw, who served under Labour prime minister Tony Blair, told i the Government must now act due to Israel’s “inhumane” actions in the warzone.

More than 600 lawyers, including former Supreme Court justices, warned the Government risks breaching international law by continuing to allow the export of weapons to Israel, following the deaths of three British aid workers in an Israeli air strike.
