Keir Starmer faces fresh Labour rebellion over Gaza ceasefire Commons vote
Labour could face another backbench rebellion during a crunch Commons vote on Gaza on Wednesday after calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” – a significant shift in the party’s position.
Sir Keir Starmer attempted to prevent a fresh revolt by confirming that Labour would push for an end to the fighting, having previously demanded a “ceasefire that lasts” – wording that had divided his MPs.
But the Government has put forward it’s own amendment to counter the SNP’s Gaza ceasefire motion in a move that could expose fresh Labour splits over the Middle East conflict – giving MPs a choice between voting for the Government’s position, which does not go as far as calling for an immediate ceasefire, and the SNP’s stance.
