Red weather warning issued as Storm Éowyn to bring 100mph winds
A rare red alert has been issued by the Met Office meaning ‘there is a danger to life’ in some areas
A rare red weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office as forecasters expect Storm Éowyn to bring winds of up to 100mph.
In some coastal areas, the Met Office has warned the high wind speeds may cause “flying debris resulting in danger to life”.
A major change in the UK’s weather will start today, the Met Office said, as heavy rain and strong gusts hit the country, caused by a powerful jet stream pushing low pressure across the Atlantic and towards the UK after a recent cold spell over North America.
The south coast of England, parts of the South West and much of the Welsh coast are covered by a yellow weather warning for wind from 7am until 6pm on Thursday.
Some coastal routes and sea fronts in these areas will be affected by spray or large waves, the national weather service said.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
