Rishi Sunak vows to crack down on 20mph zones and traffic fines

Rishi Sunak has attacked Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes set up by local councils in England.

The prime minister has vowed to crack down on the schemes which see 20mph zones set up in neighbourhoods as well as traffic fines.

Mr Sunak said punishing motorists when they are going about daily lives ā€œdoesnā€™t reflect the values of Britain.ā€

He told how local councils in England face a clampdown on using traffic offences to boost their budgets with ā€œover zealousā€ enforcement of parking and yellow-box junctions.

He also told how utility firms who dig up roads in peak times will face charges and the cash will be spent on fixing potholes.

He told The Sun ā€œcars are freedom for most people,ā€ adding: ā€œIā€™m slamming the brakes on the war on motorists ā€“ itā€™s as simple as that.ā€

The politician branded the schemes ā€œhare-brained schemesā€ and claimed they wereā€forcedā€ on Britainā€™s 40 million cash-strapped drivers.

He also accused Westminster as being out of touch with how Britain really works and claimed it was too focussed on talking about trains.
