Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli dies after ‘long illness’

Designer Roberto Cavalli has died aged 83, his fashion company has announced.

Cavalli, who was known for his flamboyant animal print designs, died at home in Florence after a long illness, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

ANSA said he had been ill “for some time” and in recent days his health conditions had “significantly worsened.” His family notified his closest friends and acquaintances of his death, it added.

In a statement on the fashion brand’s Instagram page, it said: “A life lived with love. It is with great sadness that today we say our final goodbyes to our founder Roberto Cavalli.

“From humble beginnings in Florence, Roberto succeeded in becoming a globally recognised name – loved and respected by all. Naturally talented and creative, Roberto believed that everyone can discover and nurture the artist within themselves.

“Roberto Cavalli’s legacy will live on via his creativity, his love of nature and via his family who he cherished.”

Sergio Azzolari, chief executive at Roberto Cavalli, said: “The Roberto Cavalli company shares condolences with Mr Cavalli’s family loss. His legacy remains a constant source of inspiration.”

Fausto Puglisi, creative director at the firm, added: “Dear Roberto, you may not be physically here with us anymore but I know I will feel your spirit with me always. It is the greatest honour of my career to work under your legacy and to create for the brand you founded with such vision and style.

“Rest in peace you will be missed and you are loved by so many that your name will continue on, a beacon of inspiration for others, and especially for me.”

Born on 15 November, 1940 in Florence, Italy’s premier leatherworking centre, Cavalli first appeared on the fashion circuit in the 70s and became notable for his printed leather clothing. He later expanded into brightly printed clothes and stretchy, sand-blasted jeans.

His designs caught the eye of stars including actresses Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot and latterly Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.

He is survived by his partner of 10 years, a model named Sandra Nilsson, and his six children.
