Roles for brand new MPs after just four days as Starmer fills government

Sir Keir Starmer has handed a host of ministerial jobs to MPs who entered parliament for the first time just five days ago as he continues to fill his administration.

The Prime Minister has rewarded five new MPs with government roles, including those with strong links to the New Labour movement.

Under the appointments, former Camden council leader Georgia Gould, the MP for Queen’s Park and Maida Vale and daughter of New Labour architect Lord Philip Gould, has been given the job of parliamentary secretary to the Cabinet Office.

Lord Gould, who died in 2011, was credited with leading the modernisation of the Labour Party and widely viewed as being instrumental in helping secure three general election victories.

Another New Labour figure to be given a job is Kirsty McNeill, who is a new junior minister in the Scottish Office. Ms McNeill previously worked as an adviser to Gordon Brown during his time in No 10.

The member of the new intake given the most senior job by Sir Keir is fellow human rights barrister Sarah Sackman, who will become the new Solicitor General.

The Government has also confirmed that there will be a dedicated veterans minister, with another of the new intake Alistair Carns, the MP for Birmingham Selly Oak and a former Royal Marine, handed the role.

However, the position will be in the Ministry of Defence, not the Cabinet Office, unlike under the Conservatives and it will not attend Cabinet.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, a former adviser to Ed Miliband during his time as Labour leader, has been given a role as junior energy minister.
