What time are shops open today? August bank holiday 2023 opening hours for Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and more

Much of the UK has a bank holiday today, giving everyone apart from people in Scotland their final long weekend of the year before Christmas.

While the day off is very welcome to most people, the holiday can cause disruption to things like postal deliveries and supermarket opening times.

The weather hasn’t exactly been barbecue-friendly, but if you’re running low on supplies then you might need to plan ahead to avoid being caught out.

What time are shops open today?

Supermarket opening hours can vary from store to store around the UK, so always try to double check your local branch online before heading to the shops.

Tesco

There are different opening hours for larger and smaller Tesco stores. Many larger ones will be open from 8am to 6pm on Monday.

Smaller Tesco Express stores will generally be open between 6am and 10 or 11pm today.

Use Tesco’s store locator to check your local supermarket, as times will vary.

Sainsbury’s

Most large Sainsbury’s stores will be open from 7am to 10pm on the bank holiday, but some stores will vary.

Sainsbury’s Local stores, meanwhile, will predominantly be open from 7am to midnight today.

You can use the Sainsbury’s store locator to check your closest shop.

Morrisons

Timings will vary across the country, but many Morrisons supermarkets will be open from 7am to 10pm on the bank holiday Monday.

Morrisons’ store finder will tell you timings for your local shop.

Asda

Most Asda stores will be open from 6am to 8pm today, although some will vary.

Use the Asda store finder to check your local branch.

Aldi

Aldi’s general opening times on bank holiday Monday will be 8am to 8pm, but it may vary by store.

Check your local using Aldi’s store finder.

Lidl

As with the other supermarkets, Lidl’s opening hours will vary by store, but many will be open from 8am to 10pm.

Use the store locator to check your local Lidl.

Waitrose

Most Waitrose stores should be open from 8am to 8pm today, but you can check the Waitrose store finder to find the hours for your local.

Is there post on Monday?

Royal Mail does not collect or deliver post on bank holidays. Royal Mail says: “We deliver and collect your mail on most days of the year, including Saturdays. However, we don’t usually deliver or collect on bank and public holidays.”

That means anything you post on Saturday or Sunday will not arrive until Tuesday at the earliest.

While most Post Office branches will be closed on Monday, too, they will be open as usual on Tuesday 29 August. They are always closed on Sundays.

Many private companies, such as Amazon, will deliver as normal on bank holiday Monday.

When are the rest of the UK’s bank holidays in 2023?

Bank holiday dates vary slightly across the UK: England and Wales always have the same bank holidays, but Scotland and Northern Ireland have some of their own dates.

For example, Scotland’s summer bank holiday falls at the start of August, rather than the end of the month.

England and Wales bank holidays 2023

  • Monday 28 August – summer bank holiday
  • Monday 25 December – Christmas Day
  • Tuesday 26 December – Boxing Day

Scotland bank holidays 2023

  • Thursday 30 November – St Andrew’s Day
  • Monday 25 December – Christmas Day
  • Tuesday 26 December – Boxing Day

Northern Ireland bank holidays 2023

For the first time since 2019, both Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be marked with bank holidays on the correct days, after falling on the weekend for three years in a row.
