Storm Isha brings 99mph gusts as UK travel in chaos and thousands without power

Storm Isha has left thousands of people without power as gusts of wind have topped 90 miles per hour.

Electricity and transport networks have been severely disrupted throughout the UK as the entire country was subject to wind warnings issued by the Met Office.

Electricity North West said nearly 8,000 homes had lost power, while thousands more households suffered overnight power outages in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Roads have been closed due to fallen trees, an overturned lorry and high winds while Scot Rail cancelled all of its rush-hour trains and Network Rail imposed 50mph speed restrictions across most routes.

Weather warnings for winds are still in place across the UK, with strong gusts forecast to continue until Wednesday.
