‘Do not travel’ warning as strong winds hit Christmas period

Winds of up to 80mph are forecast as Storm Pia sweeps into the UK, with a yellow severe weather warning in place across the country until 9pm on Thursday.

The warning covers Scotland, northern England and the midlands, north Wales and Northern Ireland and brings the potential for travel chaos in the run-up to Christmas.

Train company TransPennine Express (TPE) has issued “do not travel” advice asking customers to delay journeys in and out of Edinburgh until after 3pm due to the strong winds, with other train cancellations expected.
