When are there strikes in August 2023? What we know about potential train, doctor and airport strike dates

It has been a summer of strikes, and it looks set to continue into August.

Industrial action will cause further disruption to train travel later this week, while a walkout at Gatwick airport could affect holidays.

Hereā€™s what we know about strikes next month.

Trains

Additionally, Aslef members at 15 train operating companies will again refuse to work overtime from Monday 31 July to Saturday 5 August.

Aslef said it had ā€œno alternative but to take this actionā€ as it continues to fight for better pay for its members amid the cost of living crisis.

The overtime ban will affect services operated by 15 rail companies. The following operators have said they do not expect to be able to run their full timetable:

Junior doctors

Doctors have already been on strike this summer, but they will walk out again in August.

The British Medical Association has confirmed a fresh strike of junior doctors will begin in England from 7am on Friday 11 August until Tuesday 15 August.

Junior doctors from the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA) announced they will also strike during the same days.

The strikes begin just nine days after thousands of Foundation Year 1 doctors in England start their in-hospital training.

A significant number of these doctors will have signed up to the union before they start their careers and the PA news agency reported that these medics will be encouraged to take to pickets along with their new colleagues.

These dates fall just over a week before BMA consultants stage a two-day strike from Thursday 24 August to Friday 25 August.

It means that there will be a total of six days of severe disruption to NHS services in England next month.

These follow strikes in July by both junior doctors and consultants, as well as a 48-hour walkout by radiographers.

Airports

Hundreds of Gatwick Airport staff may be set to strikeĀ during one of the busiest periods.

Unite members from, DHL Services, GGS, ASC and Menzies Aviation were due to walk out from 28 July until 1 August but this has been called off after pay deals were made.

Union members at GGS, which works for British Airways and Vueling, are currently voting on a pay offer.

Unite will soon make a further announcement on whether a strike of GGS workers from Friday 4 August to Tuesday 8 August will go ahead.
