Latest news as first RAF rescue flight set to land in UK with rescue window closing

A first group of evacuees from war-torn Sudan are due to arrive in London today as the Government scrambles to make the most of a “critical” 24 hours to rescue Britons trapped in the country.

Two military flights rescuing British nationals from Sudan have now landed in Cyprus and those from the first rescue flight are expected to be given a chance to board a charter flight to London this morning.

Around 4,000 British nationals were believed to be in Sudan when violent fighting broke out in the country on 15 April and roughly 2,000 have requested help from the Foreign Office.
