Bank Holiday hours for each chain

Christmas Day is just over a week away and many people will be gathering those remaining items for the festive feast and final few gifts for family and friends.

But if you are a last-minute shopper who likes to leave it until the eleventh hour or there’s a crucial Christmas ingredient you have forgotten for the holiday season then knowing when supermarkets will still be open is key.

Here’s what we know about the opening hours for the major supermarkets over the festive period so you can plan ahead.

What are the opening times for the UK’s main supermarkets?

Waitrose

Christmas Day – all stores closed except for those in Welcome Break service stations and Shell forecourts.

Boxing Day – most shops closed although a small number will remain open. Some will be open for Deliveroo or Uber Eats orders.

New Year’s Day – most shops closed although a small number will remain open. Some will be open for Deliveroo or Uber Eats orders.

Sainsbury’s

Christmas Eve – most supermarkets open 10am – 4pm

Christmas Day – all stores closed.

Boxing Day – supermarkets will be open 9am – 6pm and convenience stores from 9am to 9pm.

New Year’s Eve – most supermarkets will be open from 10am – 4pm and convenience stores will close at 9pm.

New Year’s Day – majority of stores will be open between 8am – 8pm and convenience stores will be open between 8am – 9pm.

2 January – Scotland stores will be open from 8am – 8pm and convenience stores will trade their normal hours.

Tesco has not revealed its supermarket opening times over the Christmas and New Year period.
