Tory MP Craig Mackinlay reveals he lost both hands and feet to sepsis

A Tory MP has spoken out for this first time after losing both his hands and feet to sepsis.

MP for South Thanet Craig Mackinlay said he is “extremely lucky to be alive” after contracting the life-threatening condition in September.

Mr Mackinlay said when he woke from an induced coma in November he had completely black limbs due to the clots and lack of circulation.

He also revealed that after having emergency surgery where his arms and legs were amputated, he was fitted with four prosthetic limbs.

Mr Mackinlay, who is due to return to the Commons for the first time since his heath scare this week, told GB News: “It went completely black – they looked like pharaohs arms, sort of dug out of the desert.

“Everything was starting to shut down.

“My wife was told that they rarely see people with this amount of illness in the hospital and to perhaps prepare for the worst.”

In December, around a fortnight after the operation, Mr Mackinlay wrote to his constituents and explained that he had had sepsis and undergone what he called “extreme surgery” as a consequence but did not elaborate.

He also apologised for not having been in touch for “some time”.
