Tributes paid to ‘caring’ school bus driver who died alongside 15-year-old girl in M53 crash

Tributes have been paid to a ‘caring’ bus driver who died in a crash on the M53 motorway which also left a 15-year-old girl dead and dozens of other children injured.

Stephen Shrimpton, 40, died after the coach he was driving hit a reservation in Wirral on Friday and overturned.

Schoolgirl Jessica Baker, 15, also suffered fatal injuries as emergency services declared a major incident with 58 people treated in total.

In a tribute issued on Sunday, Mr Shrimpton’s family said: “Stephen sadly passed away in a traffic accident.

“Stephen was a loving husband and father to his wife and his wonderful children, a caring and thoughtful man who would always prioritise others over himself.

“Stephen will be sadly missed by all his friends and family. The family have requested privacy at this devastating time.”

A fundraising page has been set up by one of Mr Shrimpton’s relatives to help support his wife and young children who are aged eight and four.

According to the page, Mr Shrimpton suffered “medical issues at the wheel while driving students to school.”

“The families of Stephen and Jessica are being supported by specially trained officers and we are working with both schools and Wirral and Cheshire West Councils to ensure the necessary trauma support is in place for the children who were affected.

“We continue to investigate the circumstances of this incident and we are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or have any information to please let us know.
